The Senate Committee on Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and Cybercrime was at the NIGCOMSAT Ground Control Station in Abuja recently for an oversight function. As part of the exercise, the Committee inspected the operational processes of the Company provides both domestic and international satellite services. A roundtable also ensued where most of the discussions centred on the lack of a backup satellite for the existing NigComSat-1R. In his words, Chairman of the Committee, Senator Buhari Abdulfatai, said, “The biggest challenge NIGCOMSAT faces today is the lack of a second or backup satellite. We want to see how we can quickly acquire a second or back up satellite, so that we will be able to pass a law mandating every service provider to patronise NIGCOMSAT.”
The Managing Director, Abimbola Alale, who received the Distinguished Senators told them that NIGCOMSAT’s services are highly protected against the acts of hackers and that its services are distributed amongst teeming customers including the Defence Headquarters and some African countries of Ghana, Gabon and Cote D’Ivoire. She expressed pleasure for the visit stating that, “I am glad that you are here to learn our challenges and try to proffer ways to which we can resolve them together.”
